Scotland: Vote to quit EU ‘may fuel calls for new referendum’

A BRITISH vote to leave the European Union could result in a “groundswell of anger” in Scotland and “clamour” for another independence referendum, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon claimed yesterday.

In her first Brussels speech as First Minister, Ms Sturgeon called for a “double majority” to ensure that all nations within Britain vote No for the country to quit the EU.

She had a stern warning for Britain if her calls were ignored.

She told the European Policy Centre that the clamour for another independence vote “may well be unstoppable.”

The First Minister also used her speech to demand that EU member states be given autonomy over key policy areas such as public health.

Her plans for a minimum alcohol price are current being challenged in the European courts.
