There are two big betting races this afternoon and the Lanzarote Hurdle takes pride of place at Kempton Park at 2.40 and the new kid on the block, Warrantor, is fancied to roll over his more experienced rivals and land this prestigious handicap hurdle.
Trained by the in-form Warren Greatrex, the six-year-old has looked better the deeper the test of stamina put in front of him.
Last time out at Market Rasen he merely galloped his rivals into the ground when coming home a full six lengths clear of Racing Europe.
Both the form of that success and his previous win at Chepstow has been nicely cemented since by the horses behind him and he can continue on the upgrade here of what looks a fair handicap rating of 135.
Of course there are any number of dangers here with the likes of the enigmatic Dawalan and Foxcub on the short list.
The latter finished sixth in this last year but needs the ground to dry out to play a major role here.
So a bigger danger could well come from Saffron Wells. Neil King’s charge looks overpriced at around the 14/1 mark.
The seven-year-old stepped up on his opening salvo at Aintree with a good staying on effort at Newbury and should now be cherry-ripe.
He remains unexposed over timber and is the each-way alternative to the selection.
The likely favourite Tea For Two certainly has an engine inside but his jumping could well be a concern in this better race.
Later on Masters Hill, who ran a cracking race at Newbury last time despite not being given the best of rides, looks sure to go close in the three-mile handicap chase at 3.15.
A good staying novice hurdler last season, we have yet to see the very best from this lightly raced nine-year-old.
The Warwick Classic Chase over 3m5f will once again be a real stamina test in the ground and I fancy a huge run from the lightly raced Return Spring.
The ground was arguably too quick and the test of stamina too sharp when he ran a career best over the fences at Cheltenham last time out when a staying on third to RSA hopeful Kings Palace.
He remains a work in progress but is preferred to last year’s winner Shotgun Paddy in receipt of 5lbs and the lightweights Global Power and Dark Glacier.
There is a valuable card at Lingfield this afternoon but in one of the lesser races Tidal’s Baby makes the most appeal at 1.30.
A versatile sort, the six-year-old is best when coming off the pace over this six furlongs rather than the mile he ran over last time and his rating of 69 looks a winnable mark.
Earlier on, Kings Bayonet can takes the 10f handicap at 2.05.
While I fancy a huge run from Coincidently in the finale at 3.40 if he settles early on.
