Arsenal 0 Swansea 1

TASHAN DENIRAN-ALLEYNE witnessed Swansea complete the double over Arsenal with a late winner courtesy of Bafetimbi Gomis

A late Bafetimbi Gomis header gave Swansea City an unlikely victory against in-form Arsenal on Monday night and became only the second side in the league to win at Ashburton Grove this season.

Arsenal piled on the pressure in the second half but couldn’t find a way past returning goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski, who made a brilliant double save late on to ensure the Swans left north London with all three points as they also became the first team to complete the double over the Gunners this campaign.

Manager Arsene Wenger was very critical of the away side’s display in the aftermath of a disappointing result for the hosts.

“We were unlucky, I think, against a team who refused to play completely and just defended,” he bemoaned.

“I don’t know how many passes they made tonight, I haven’t seen the stats. They came here to defend and they didn’t play. We couldn’t take advantage of it.”

After a dull first half, the game improved after the interval as both Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey blasted decent openings into the side-netting before Fabianski denied Nacho Monreal from close range as the Gunners searched for an opener.

The Polish keeper continued to frustrate his former side with two point-blank saves to deny Alexis and Theo Walcott — but in truth both were very weak attempts.

The Swans defended resolutely and dealt the hosts a killer blow with five minutes to go as substitute Gomis’s header was confirmed to have crossed the line via goal-line technology despite David Ospina’s best efforts.

The result means Arsenal failed to move level on points with Manchester City in the race to finish second but will secure a top-three finish with victory at Old Trafford against Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Swansea manager Garry Monk was understandably delighted with his team’s performance as their brilliant season continues and are now just two points off the final Europa League spot with two games remaining.

“I’m very pleased with the boys tonight,” he said.

“They showed excellent attitude, were very disciplined and worked well, the idea was to get to the last 20 minutes still in the game, make the substitutions and try and get the goal on a breakaway, which proved to be the point.”
