Belgium: Massive transport strikes bring Brussels to a halt

BELGIAN workers reaffirmed their opposition to the government’s austerity agenda yesterday with their latest one-day protest strike.

Much of the transport network came to a halt as international train services such as Thalys and Eurostar, the national SNCB railway system, buses and underground services were all hit hard by the strike which continued until late last night.

Brussels Nord station was fully closed and trains to Brussels from Paris and London were also severely affected.

Brussels airport authorities warned travellers to show up early and seek alternative transport since, while flights were unaffected, reaching the airport was difficult.

Postal workers and teachers, as well as some police and fire services, also joined the strike.

Germany was also hit by transport problems yesterday when train drivers’ union GDL began a 43-hour pay strike that ends at 9pm this evening.

“Where there is no will, there is no way,” quipped GDL leader Claus Weselsky, blaming management for failed talks.
