GMB slams lack of plan for Sellafield

TRADE union GMB yesterday slammed the lack of any “integrated plan” for the Sellafield nuclear power station site in Cumbria.

It said without a forward plan for the site, there could be no development of the long-term disposal of radioactive nuclear waste.

Sellafield is being decommissioned, but government attempts to establish a deep underground waste-disposal facility in Cumbria floundered after local authorities and communities rejected them — despite offers of government cash for “community facilities.”

GMB national secretary for energy Gary Smith said: “GMB wants an integrated plan for the nuclear sector at Sellafield.

“There is no evidence of any viable integrated plan or campaign for the future of the Sellafield site.

“If there is no future for the site then there is no way we could recommend to the local community they accept having the nation’s nuclear waste stored in west Cumbria.”
