Junior docs set to vote on action in hours dispute

JUNIOR doctors will vote today on industrial action in the long-standing working-hours row with Tory Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Mr Hunt announced a fresh offer on Wednesday, in a desperate bid to win over the NHS England medics shortly before the strike ballot.

The Department of Health says he has written to doctors promising an 11 per cent basic pay rise and restricted hours to “make care safer for patients.”

He also offered extra pay after 7pm on weekends, rather than 10pm in previous plans.

British Medical Association junior doctors committee chairman Johann Malawana said: “This is effectively megaphone diplomacy.

“The government decided at the 11th hour — after taking years to engage with us seriously — on the last night before a ballot is opened to decide to put out a contract proposal. That tells you what this government is trying to achieve.”
