Syria government troops end Aleppo prison seige after a year

Troops loyal to Assad government enter beseiged Aleppo prison following aerial bombardment

Syrian forces broke a year-long rebel siege of Aleppo’s central prison yesterday.

Government troops entered the complex at dawn after an hours-long air barrage which saw more than 100 barrel bombs hit the area around the prison.

The Nusra Front and other Islamist groups began besieging the prison in April 2013.

They had launched several attacks in attempts to free as many as 4,000 inmates held in the prison, with fighters repeatedly driving suicide car-bombs into the front gates.

The area is also strategically important as it lies near a key supply route for rebel-held parts of Aleppo.

Elsewhere in Aleppo province, some 60,000 people in both rebel and government-held areas received food aid for the first time in months after the International Committee of the Red Cross was granted access. The ICRC operation will continue for the next few days.
