STUC 2015: ‘Outright opposition’ to TTIP declared

THE Scottish TUC declared “outright opposition” to the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Treaty (TTIP) at Congress in Ayr yesterday.

Delegates unanimously called for the institutions of the European Union and its member states, including Britain, to stop the negotiations with the US and not to ratify the parallel EU-Canada Ceta deal.

Jane Carolan of Unison told Congress: “TTIP is a secret treaty, hidden from politicians and negotiated by EU officials in private, what does that do for democracy, transparency and accountability?

“TTIP poses a threat to democracy itself, through the proposed use of private quasi-judicial measures such as the Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS) system.

“ISDS means multinationals can sue elected governments whose laws or actions are deemed to be contrary to the operation of the so-called free market and free trade.”

Tommy Brennan of North Lanarkshire TUC said TTIP, Ceta and ISDS represent “a transfer of power from democratically elected governments to private corporations on a scale never seen before.”

The STUC has committed to campaign against TTIP and will support grassroots protests against the trade deals planned for December in Paris.
