CWU goes to war on unfair mail competition

The Communication Workers’ Union (CWU) agreed yesterday to launch a campaign to address the issues of unfair competition in the mail industry.

Deputy general secretary Dave Ward highlighted how the regulator must be persuaded to intervene now to stop unfair competition from direct delivery companies like TNT.

Mr Ward warned that if the regulator does not intervene for a couple of years companies like TNT will then complain they have invested large sums of money.

He argued that the campaign must also persuade politicians that the universal service is under threat.

The CWU will also look to recruit members in the new competitors in the market like TNT.

Royal Mail chair Moya Green also addressed the issue of unfair competition and the role of the regulator. “The regulatory approach has been very one sided, lacked a proper perspective as to what it was to be a universal service provider in a market that is in decline,” said Ms Green, who called for the regulator to change focus from competition to the need to preserve the universal service provision.
