Iran: Petrol to rise by 40 per cent

TEHRAN announced yesterday that it will push through a 40 per cent rise in the price of petrol this morning in a bid to reduce state fuel subsidies.

Holding down petrol prices costs the government over £20 billion a year.

Official news agency IRNA quoted oil products distribution company spokesman Davood Arabali as saying that the new price per litre for subsidised petrol would be 10,000 rials (22 pence).

State television also reported that a current plan allowing for lower subsidised prices on the first 60 litres of petrol a month purchased by consumers for each car they own would also end.
