High-street bully’s ‘sign or sack’ threat

HIGH-STREET chain The Works Stores is threatening to sack staff at its Birmingham distribution centre unless they sign new contracts.

The workers have been given a deadline of tomorrow to sign or face dismissal.

General union GMB, which is not recognised by the company, says the contracts mean new shifts and compulsory bank holiday and weekend working.

The workers are based at Minworth, Birmingham. Thirty out of 50 workers are refusing to sign.

GMB regional organiser Dominic Hinks said: “I am appalled that such a well-known chain treats its workforce with such utter contempt.

“These changes will significantly impact on work-life balance and earnings for members, who are predominantly migrant workers. These new contracts will hit individuals hard financially.”

He accused the company of “corporate greed” and said: “GMB will support our members if the company goes through with the threats to sack them.”
