Printing firm set to close

A YORKSHIRE printing firm announced its closure yesterday with the loss of 200 jobs.

RR Donnelley, based at Flaxby in rural North Yorkshire, prints telephone directories.

Printers’ union Unite said it had not been given a reason for the closure, which is expected by the end of the year.

The US owners have other concerns in Britain and Unite plans to meet bosses next week, hoping to redeploy jobs.

“This is a bitter blow for the workforce and their families as well as the local economy,” said Unite officer Chris Daly.

“These are well-paid jobs that are under threat and won’t be easily replicated in rural North Yorkshire.

“The company prints telephone directories. It had moved into other markets and has printed Avon catalogues for years. We are not sure what has precipitated the closure.”
