Unions attack Johnson’s rushed 24-hour Tube plans

UNIONS blasted London mayor Boris Johnson’s “back-of-a fag-packet plan” for a 24-hour Tube yesterday, as they resumed talks with bosses over pay.

London Underground plans to run 24-hour services on its deep level lines from September, but the changes have come paired with the closure of every booking office on the network.

Unions say no progress has been made on a pay deal for this year — and arrangements for staff working on the new services are still up in the air.

Workers are demanding a 4-day week.

TSSA general secretary Manuel Cortes said the changes were being “rushed through just to meet Boris Johnson’s election strategy.”

“He wants to face the Uxbridge electors claiming he is the man who pushed through the all night Tube service in the face of union opposition,” he said.

“In fact we are not opposed to a well funded and well managed 24-hour weekend service. We are, however, totally against his back-of-a fag-packet plan which will cost 900 jobs and will lose money for the next 18 years.”
