Scotland: Lecturers set to lobby for uni reforms

UNIVERSITY and college lecturers in Scotland are to lobby Holyrood tomorrow to support changes in the way Scottish universities are run.

Education union UCU says more and more university principals are facing criticism over pay rises, lack of transparency and excessive expenses.

It wants to see universities made more democratic, representative and transparent, with elected chairs of governing bodies which should include students and trade union nominees.

The Scottish Parliament is planning an overhaul in the way universities are run and UCU will show its support for the proposals with a lobby tomorrow.

Lecturers from across Scotland will take part in the lobby which will run from 12 noon until 2.30pm.Beforehand, UCU members will meet Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning Angela Constance MSP to present 1,400 campaign postcards signed by university staff and students from Scottish universities supporting reform.
