LIB DEM business minister Jenny Willott was the highest-profile casualty of the general election in Wales, writes Luke James.
Ms Willott paid the price for her party propping up the Tories as an 11 per cent swing to Labour saw Jo Stevens claim the seat.
Lib Dem campaigners had called voters to tell them Ms Stevens was a trade union-backed candidate in a desperate bid to scare them off voting Labour.
But Ms Stevens admitted that her satisfaction had been “tempered” by Labour results elsewhere.
Labour’s Mari Williams could not achieve the 0.4 per cent swing needed to win Tory-held Cardiff North, which was number four on the party’s target list.
Plaid Cymru was also frustrated after narrowly failing to claim two target seats.
Leanne Wood’s party was just 229 votes short in Ynys Mon, while a strong Green showing spoiled their chances of winning Ceredigion.
Green candidate Daniel Thompson achieved 2,088 — the first time the Greens have kept a deposit at a general election in Wales.
