3 more watched for Ebola infection signs
Spain: Three more people have been put under quarantine at a Madrid hospital where a Spanish nurse became infected with Ebola, officials said yesterday.
The nurse — part of a team that cared for a Spanish priest who died from the virus last month — was the first case of the disease spreading outside west Africa.
More than 50 people were being monitored.
Drone strike kills 10 ‘militants’
Pakistan: A suspected US drone strike killed 10 alleged militants in North Waziristan yesterday, Pakistani intelligence officials said.
There have been three such strikes in 24 hours, the first killing four.
The US halted its deeply unpopular drone strikes for six months while Pakistan engaged in fruitless peace talks with the Taliban.
Reunification talks suspended over oil
Cyprus: President Nicos Anastasiades suspended reunification talks yesterday in protest at Turkish plans to search for oil and gas in waters where the Cypriot government has already granted licences.
The UN said it would meet Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders separately to discuss the way forward for talks.
Amazon tax deal probed by EU
European Union: The EU’s competition authority opened a probe yesterday into Amazon’s tax practices.
The watchdog suspects that a 2003 tax agreement with Luxembourg, where Amazon stashes most of its EU profits, may count as illegal state aid.
Thousands protest against low wages
Romania: Thousands of people protested yesterday against low salaries and underfunding of the health system which has led to an estimated 30,000 doctors and nurses to seek work abroad.
Workers massed outside government offices in the pouring rain shouting: “Thieves!” and “Down with the liars!”
