Venezuela president pledges to increase regional support

VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro pledged more resources on Monday for the eastern Caribbean under the PetroCaribe programme.

On a one-day visit to the island of St Vincent, he said he was seeking a regional hub to serve as the centre for the construction of 50 homes financed by the Venezuelan programme, which provides fuel at generous financial terms to Caribbean and Central American countries.

The socialist president added that the pilot project could be a model for future investments on the island.

“There should be no doubt in our minds that PetroCaribe today is the backbone of the energy, social and economic development of our region,” said Mr Maduro.

He added that plans were afoot to launch an initiative aimed at fostering trade between Venezuela and the eastern Caribbean to facilitate customs, transport and operations for Petrocaribe projects.

Venezuela will also provide 7,500 laptops for St Vincent’s government.
