Oxford Union urged to bar racist Tommy Robinson

Anti-fascists urged the Oxford Union to withdraw its invitation to former English Defence League leader Tommy Robinson yesterday after the racist was arrested again.

Mr Robinson was set to speak at the debating society on Thursday but has been taken back into custody after allegedly responding to threats on Twitter.

Unite Against Fascism (UAF) secretary Weyman Bennett told the Star: “This criminal racist should not be given any platform to speak on.

“He built a racist gang and never renounced the politics of hatred.

“It’s not that we’re against discussion and debate but we are not for giving platforms to racists and fascists.”

Mr Robinson claimed that he was arrested to stop him exposing the police.

On Monday evening Mr Robinson was attacked at HMP Bedford, where he was taken on the day.

His supporters say that he was subsequently moved for his own safety.

UAF is to hold a protest on Thursday unless the Oxford Union formally bars Mr Robinson from future events.
