THE Iranian government was at The Hague today calling for the UN highest court to lift US sanctions.
President Donald Trump’s decision to unilaterally reimpose sanctions that were removed following the nuclear agreement in 2015 was an act of “naked economic aggression,” Iran argued.
Other parties to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, a seven-party accord that saw Iran give guarantees over its civil nuclear power programme, have all condemned Mr Trump’s move.
The Islamic Republic says that the US decision violates a 1955 bilateral agreement between Washington and Tehran called the Treaty of Amity, which regulates economic and consular ties.
The fact the sanctions “intended to damage, as severely as possible, Iran’s economy” meant they were a treaty breach, representative Mohsen Mohebi told the court.
He asked judges to urgently suspend sanctions to protect Iranians from their consequences while an underlying case challenging their legality is heard.
