THREE of the main groups occupying protest sites in central Hong Kong plan to hold a spot referendum tomorrow on whether to hold their ground or clear their camps.

The protesters say that they will gauge public opinion on accepting government offers for more talks or pressing ahead with their demonstrations.

Hong Kong’s government has offered to submit a report to the central government noting discontent with a plan to have a 1,200-person committee pick candidates for the city’s top leader in 2017 elections.

The protesters say that the committee is weighted toward government supporters and should be scrapped or reformed to better represent the population.

Hong Kong officials have also offered to hold regular talks with protesters about democratic reforms if they end their nearly month-long demonstrations, which have occupied streets in three of the city’s busiest areas.

The Hong Kong Federation of Students has already rejected the government offer but backs tomorrow’s “referendum.”
