Post Office clerks call off action as deal is reached

Post Office clerks called off a 48-hour strike last night after negotiations with bosses — but the details of their settlement had yet to be agreed as the Star went to press.

Workers in the admin and supply chain, who distribute and collect cash from branches, were due to shut up shop today, tomorrow and then on New Year’s Eve and January 2.

A union source told the Star at 5pm yesterday that the walk-out had been cancelled after a day of negotiations, but reps continued with bilateral meetings to discuss the fine detail.

It is not known whether the two later strike dates will go ahead.

The 1,500 workers in the division have been threatened with 28 per cent job losses.

Reps have previously said they would refuse to settle unless executives took compulsory redundancies off the table.

Communication Workers’ Union deputy general secretary Dave Ward said last week: “There are no circumstances under which we would accept compulsory redundancies of workers in the admin and supply chain.

“These workers risk their lives every day to do their jobs.

“This is a crucial dispute and these workers understand how real the threat of compulsory redundancies is to their futures.

“Many of these workers have dedicated their working lives to the Post Office and now they are being told that in the New Year they may lose their jobs.

“It is an appalling way to treat dedicated, hard-working employees and by balloting staff working in the crown post offices, we will show how strongly we feel about these proposals as a union.”

Counter workers at crown post offices are due to be balloted for strike action in the new year.
