WELSH workers will be at the forefront of defeating the Conservative attack on trade union rights, Shavanah Taj told the Wales TUC Congress today.
The union federation’s general secretary called on delegates to mobilise the biggest possible attendance at the June 18 We Deserve Better demonstration in London to show ministers that they had “picked the wrong fight” in trying to undermine the right to strike.
“Inflation is at 10 per cent and rising. People are struggling to make sure the bailiffs don’t come knocking. The government’s answer?
“Get a better job. Use value brands. What about those fluffy socks you got for Christmas? Wear those to bed!”
But she said the roots of the current crisis went deeper, to a “40-year Conservative ideological campaign” that had stripped working-class people of rights and left too many, “in work or out of it,” without enough to get by.
Welsh unions would not be alone in combatting the Tory assault since the Welsh government was ready to work with them and had a track record of repealing hostile legislation, she said.
