Football friendly: Preston 1-2 Liverpool

Jordan Ibe impresses for Reds on debut

Rickie Lambert made his Liverpool debut but youngster Jordan Ibe was the star of the show as the Reds came from behind to win 2-1 against Preston on Saturday.

Brendan Rodgers started Lambert alongside Sunderland-bound Fabio Borini, Philippe Coutinho and new signing Emre Can.

Can lasted 20 minutes before having to be subsituted off with a calf strain, being replaced by Ibe.

Just before half time the Reds found themselves a goal behind.

Goalkeeper Brad Jones saved Joe Garner’s acrobatic effort but was unable to keep out former Manchester United youngster Josh Brownhill’s rebound.

Rodgers made a number of changes during the break, taking off Lambert and introducing Suso.

Preston manager Simon Grayson changed his entire starting 11 during the break and the change backfired.

Suso equalised with 25 minutes to go, the impressive Ibe making the assist.

And three minutes later, Ibe was once again the provider.

Another subsitute, Kristoffer Peterson, profited from Ibe’s cut back to give Liverpool their first victory of the pre-season.

Speaking after the game, Rodgers said: “Rickie will just get better and better as he becomes more familiar with the group and becomes accustomed to the playing style.

“I thought he was excellent and worked hard.

“I think he’ll get goals for us and I’m delighted he’s here. He’s a wonderful character, he’s 32 years of age but is still fit and strong and he’ll make a great contribution for us this year.”

Newcastle striker Loic Remy is set to join the Reds for a fee of £8.5 million and will join the side in the US for the rest of their pre-season, while the club are still hoping to sign Southampton defender Dejan Lovren for £20m.
