Sunak under growing pressure over decision to rehire Braverman after accusation of ‘multiple’ breaches of ministerial code

PRIME MINISTER Rishi Sunak is under growing pressure over his decision to rehire Suella Braverman following accusations she committed “multiple breaches” of the ministerial code.

Some Tory MPs have joined opposition parties in questioning the PM’s decision to reinstate Ms Braverman as home secretary just days after she resigned over a security breach.

Former Tory Party chairman Sir Jake Berry said Ms Braverman was responsible for a “really serious breach” after sending an email from her private address.

He told TalkTV on Wednesday that the Home Secretary had sent a document “from a private email address to another MP, she then sought to copy in that individual’s wife but accidentally sent it to a staffer in Parliament,” saying she had committed “multiple breaches.”

Tory MP Caroline Nokes also said that there were “big questions” to answer and backed calls from opposition parties for an inquiry into the security breaches.

The backlash to Ms Braverman’s return to the Cabinet continued to snowball on Thursday, following allegations that she had been investigated by government officials in January for leaking a story concerning MI5.

Mr Sunak was also accused of potentially misleading Parliament after claiming that Ms Braverman had reported her own mistake of sending a document from her personal email.

It was previously reported that the breach was reported by another MP’s aide who was accidentally copied into the email, with Ms Braverman only admitting to her mistake after she was confronted about it.

Shadow leader of the Commons Thangam Debbonaire said: “Suella Braverman’s appointment raises serious questions about Rishi Sunak’s judgement and the public deserves answers now.

“The Prime Minister must swiftly offer clarity to these contradicting versions of events, which relate to our country’s national security.

“If Rishi Sunak has misled Parliament and the country, he needs to correct the record urgently and act.”

Downing Street refused to comment on the accuracy of Mr Sunak’s claims when pressed on the issue on Thursday.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman said: “You’ve got the PM’s words. She had raised it.

“I’m from my part not going to get into details on conversations and timelines around this.”

Responding to criticism in Parliament, Cabinet Office minister Lucy Neville-Rolfe insisted that Ms Braverman “deserves another chance.”
