FORMER Sunderland player Asamoah Gyan has dismissed “wild allegations and rumours” that he ritually killed rapper friend Castro De Destroyer and Janet Badu earlier this year.
The hiplife artist and his friend have not been seen since July after they went missing from the Aqua Safari Resort in Ada, Ghana, while holidaying with the Gyan family and close friends.
Police searched the area for a week but there was no sign of the pair beyond the jet ski they had been riding.
Lawyer Kissi Agyabeng — who was on the Ada trip, though not at the time of the disappearance — held a press conference on Wednesday in a bid to put to bed press speculation that Gyan had been involved with the mysterious disappearance.
Reports have ranged from suggestions that Gyan had his longtime friend and musical collaborator kidnapped to claims that Castro was sacrificed to further Gyan’s career.
The Black Stars captain had remained silent so as not to “interfere with police investigations,” Agyabeng said reading from a prepared statement.
“In our painful silence, we have been totally dismayed by the fact that the platform was provided for the peddling of these wild and ludicrous allegations and rumours against us,” he said.
“Those to whom the platform was provided offered no evidence whatsoever to back their statements. And indeed, the allegation of spiritual sacrifice can by no stretch of the imagination be propped up.”
Fuel was poured on the speculations when journalist Daniel Kenu was beaten up shortly after questioning Gyan about the rumours.
Gyan’s brother Baffour, a former footballer who was in Ada with the group, was originally said to have led the assault but Kenu later dropped charges “on health grounds.”
Agyabeng apologised for Baffour Gyan’s “angy outburst” that may have “unintentionally (sent) a signal to (the men he was with) to get physical.”
The lawyer added: “We condemn Daniel Kenu’s roughing up. And we condemn any physical attack on journalists.”
A group of Ghana fans had organised a demonstration during a Black Stars training session at the Baba Yara stadium accusing Gyan of killing Castro and demanding police quiz him on the allegations.
Gyan left Sunderland to sign a lucrative deal with Al Ain in Abu Dhabi in 2012. Earlier this year, he announced he had signed a four-year contract extension.
He launched is musical career under the moniker Baby Jet with a collaboration with Castro in 2010.
