Khan calls on MPs to ban the sale of social housing

LABOUR MP Sadiq Khan will take on Tory plans to extend the right to buy to around 1.3 million housing association tenants, he announced yesterday.

Mr Khan, who is running to be Labour’s London mayoral candidate, will table an amendment in the Commons that would make it illegal for social housing to be sold.

Around 1.3 million housing association renters would only be allowed to take a mortgage out on their homes if a like-for-like replacement in the same area had been built.

“My amendment will prevent any dwelling from being sold until a replacement home is built,” said Mr Khan.

Acting Labour leader Harriet Harman echoed the call for a mayor that will represent all Londoners and urged everyone to register their support.

“Labour’s mayoral candidate will lead the fightback against the Tories on behalf of Londoners,” she said.

“Who we choose is crucial — and a decision that I want everybody to be involved in making.”
