Sudanese forces attack protesters as talks suspended

SUDANESE forces swooped to clear protesters in central Khartoum last night as talks about a new transitional administration were suspended for 72 hours.

At least nine people were injured in the violent attack as a square close to Sudan’s military headquarters continued to be occupied.

Activists have been there for weeks as they press for an end to military rule and for power to pass to a civilian-led transitional government which would oversee democratic elections.

Sudan has been led by a Military Transitional Council (MTC) since the ousting of authoritarian Islamist President Omar al-Bashir last month.

Huge demonstrations have been led by the Sudanese Professionals’ Association – an umbrella group including trade unions, doctors associations and the Sudanese Communist Party – demanding civilian rule.

Its spokesman  Amjad Farid said: “We hold the military council responsible for attacking civilians.

“They are using the same methods as the previous regime in dealing with rebels.”

There appeared to be a breakthrough in negotiations earlier this week with an agreement on the structure of a joint administration to lead Sudan to democracy.

Talks have been suspended amid the latest wave of violence from the Sudanese security services.
