Labour set to gain at least three Tory-run councils in May's local elections

LABOUR is set to take over at least three Tory-run councils after the local elections in May, research published yesterday suggests.

The party under Jeremy Corbyn is set to snatch control of Barnet, Wandsworth and Westminster in what is expected to be the best local election performance seen in London by any party since 1968, according to the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University.

The poll found that 54 per cent of Londoners will vote Labour in the council elections, with just 28 per cent backing the Tories.

And Philip Cowley, a politics professor at the university, suggested that anger over the Grenfell Tower fire could even tip Kensington & Chelsea Labour’s way.

The Kensington constituency had its first ever Labour MP — Emma Dent Coad — elected last June.

Prof Cowley said Kensington & Chelsea “should remain safe” for the Tories but the Grenfell Tower fire means that he would “advise caution.”

“This poll means that the Conservatives are facing difficulties in almost every London council they still control,” he added.

A senior Tory MP told PoliticsHome last month that PM Theresa May could face a leadership challenge if her party loses control of London councils.
