THE European Parliament is set to hold a hearing on oil giant ExxonMobil’s climate change denial tomorrow, following pressure from environmental campaigners.
Food & Water Europe, a non-profit organisation which “champions healthy food and clean water for all,” petitioned the EU in 2016 to hold the company accountable for its actions.
A 2015 study by Harvard University found a sharp contrast between what the fossil-fuel corporation’s own researchers knew about its role in devastating the climate and what it told the public for 55 years.
“Exxon’s deceitful lobbying has been slowing down ambitious EU climate policies for much too long,” Food & Water Europe campaigns officer Frida Kieninger said.
“While Exxon has been keen to snatch up any opportunity to lobby EU decision-makers, it is refusing to show up at the EU Parliament hearing to explain its behaviour.
“Exxon must be held accountable. We are asking parliamentarians to strip the multinational of its EU Parliament lobby badges, just like they did with Monsanto in 2017.”
