MLS in talks over Anglo-American Cup

FOOTBALL: The MLS is in talks with the Premier League over setting up an Anglo-American Cup that would involve the winners of the English top flight and the FA Cup.

The MLS, now in its 20th year, has experienced a considerable growth in popularity over the last few seasons due to the success of the American national teams and an improved TV deal with foreign broadcasters.

Kovacevic given 10-match ban

RUGBY: Serbia player Zarko Kovacevic has been handed a 10-match ban by the Rugby League European Federation (RLEF) in the latest fallout from the abandonment of last month’s international against Ireland in Belgrade.

The RLEF’s disciplinary committee found Kovacevic guilty of two charges of misconduct that included tripping, kicking and striking during Serbia’s match against Ireland on August 29 and said he has until this afternoon to launch an appeal.

Livermore set to avoid cocaine ban

FOOTBALL: Hull midfielder Jake Livermore will avoid sanction for testing positive for cocaine due to mitigating circumstances, according to the BBC.

The 25-year-old England international was suspended by Hull and the Football Association on May 15, pending the outcome of disciplinary proceedings.

He tested positive for a banned substance after playing in Hull’s win at Crystal Palace on April 25, but it subsequently came to light that he was grieving the death of his newborn baby.

Official sources were unable to comment on whether Livermore will be punished or not, due to protocols surrounding the matter.
