This impressive debut by Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza stars Palestinian actor Saleh Bakri as a mafia hit man who crosses paths with a blind girl (Sara Serraiocco, below) while on a job. In consequence, his life is steered in an unexpected direction.

Subverting superficial cliches, the camera sweeps through the streets of a sweltering Palermo as a formidable picture of a time and a place emerges.

The result is a fascinating study not only of the dynamics of crime but of a whole way of life.
