US: Obama lauds restraint but asks cops to rebuild trust

PRESIDENT Barack Obama said yesterday that the Baltimore riots show that police departments need to build more trust among black communities.

He added that his heart went out to Baltimore police officers who were injured by rioters, insisting that there was no excuse for such violence and that Baltimore police had showed “appropriate restraint.”

But he urged police departments “to hold accountable people when they do something wrong.”

The president said that Attorney General Loretta Lynch was reaching out to mayors to let them know what resources were available for retraining police and providing body cameras.

Problems would continue if underlying social issues such as poor education, drugs and limited job opportunities were not tackled, he said.

Schools reopened in Baltimore yesterday after a massive force of national guards and police had enforced a 10pm to 5am curfew following two days of protest and rioting after the funeral of Freddie Gray, an African-American who died of injuries received while in police custody.
