UN probe of Tory cuts means ‘international embarrassment’

TORY cuts are causing Britain “international embarrassment,” the SNP said yesterday after the United Nations launched its third investigation into government policy in as many years.

The UN probe will assess the effect of Tory policies on “disadvantaged and marginalised individuals and groups.”

Tax credit cuts, new restrictions on trade unions and the growth in foodbanks will be examined.

A separate UN investigation will also look into possible breaches of disability rights.

The investigation of Tory policy comes just a year after the UN said the bedroom tax should be abolished on human rights grounds.

A government spokesman played down the latest probe as a “routine request for information” that is part of a “periodic reporting process to the UN.”

But SNP MSP Clare Adamson said the news “turned the Tory austerity programme and the UK into an international embarrassment.”
