Knitters cotton on to anti-bomb campaign

Peace campaigners put their knitting skills to use in at Todmorden, West Yorkshire, on Saturday to help create a seven-mile-long scarf for a special anti-nuclear protest.

Knitters at the town’s Cheeky Sew and Sew shop are among hundreds of Wool Against Weapons campaigners across the country who have been knitting sections of the scarf.

When finished, the giant garment will be used in a seven-miles-long demonstration linking the government’s Atomic Weapons Establishments at Aldermaston and Burghfield on August 9.

Organiser Cath Bann of Yorkshire and the Humber CND said: “We want the £100 billion cost of Trident to be spent on things like the health service and education.”

The fabric will later be turned into blankets for hospices, emergency areas and war zones.
