New York governor leads trade mission to Havana

New York governor Andrew Cuomo led a groundbreaking delegation of US business executives to Cuba on Monday, holding exploratory trade talks with Havana officials.

He praised presidents Barack Obama and Raul Castro for re-establishing diplomatic relations after half a century and moving towards a broader normalisation that is expected to include closer trade ties.

“Like the people in Cuba, the people in New York and the United States are very excited about the courage that your President Raul Castro has shown and the leadership that he has shown,” Mr Cuomo told his hosts.

“We believe that this is going to be a dramatic change that is going to be to the benefit of the people of Cuba and also to the people of the US.”

The New York governor said that Mr Obama “has the ability to grant licences so that businesses can actually start developing right now in select areas and those are areas that we want to pursue.”
