Campaigners launch ‘festival of democracy’

DEMOCRACY activists took over statues of Winston Churchill and Lloyd George yesterday.

The action kicks off a 10-day festival of democracy to be staged on Parliament Square by campaigners calling for “democratic reform” of party funding, the media and lobbying.

Occupy Democracy activist George Barda said the protest was inspired by the Chartists and Suffragettes.

Speaking from one statue, he said: “Democracy means more than putting a cross on a ballot paper every five years.”
