Worriers – Imaginary Life

Album review by Ian Sinclair

Worriers – Imaginary Life (Don Giovanni Records)

4/5

THE debut album from Brooklyn pop-punk outfit Worriers, Imaginary Life throws a hand grenade into the largely apolitical independent music scene.

Written and sung by Lauren Denitzo, the politically charged quasi-anthems have an infectious urgency and edge much like fellow US guitar bands Sleater-Kinney or Ex-Hex.

Yes All Cops takes a pop at the police — “I’ve learned not to trust anyone/ least of all men in blue uniform” — and the silence of the bystanders to US gun culture.

Elsewhere, Good Luck is a caustic finger-pointing tirade about growing up and moving to the country while They/Them/Theirs brilliantly questions the gender binaries that the dominant ideology forces upon us.

With most of the songs coming in at under three minutes the record is a real jolt to the system. Confident, literate and angry, this is music that means something — music, in short, to live your life to.
