Nicot dies after cardiac arrest on the pitch

A 23-year-old defender from a lower-league football club became the second Belgian player to die of cardiac arrest in less than two weeks yesterday.

Antwerp-based team Beerschot-Wilrijk says Tim Nicot died after collapsing during a match last week. He was taken to the Antwerp university hospital, where he had been kept in an artificial coma.

The club issued a statement via Twitter saying: “KFCO Wilrijk Beerschot is in mourning. Tim Nicot has just died. We wish family and friends strength.”

In April, Gregory Mertens, a 24-year-old defender from Lokeren, also died from cardiac arrest during a reserve-team match while Rugby League player Danny Jones passed away last week also due to cardiac arrest.
