Mellor tells 'little bastard' cabby to 'f*** off'

Foul-mouthed former minister now faces RMT-backed taxi boycott

CABBIES discussed an official policy of booting David Mellor out of their cabs yesterday after the disgraced Tory toff launched a four-letter tirade at a driver who refused to change route.

Former minister and radio host Mr Mellor, who resigned from John Major’s cabinet in 1992 after a marital scandal, called the south London cabby a “smart-arsed little bastard,” according to a newspaper report yesterday.

Mr Mellor and aristocratic girlfriend Lady Penelope Cobham flagged down the taxi after a slap-up meal at the exclusive Orrery restaurant in Marylebone.

When the cabbie protested that Mr Mellor’s preferred route would be difficult on a Friday evening, the multimillionaire fumed: “I’ve been in the Cabinet, I’m an award-winning broadcaster, I’m a Queen’s counsel. You think that your experiences are anything compared to mine?”

He told the driver, who began recording the conversation after Mr Mellor lost his temper, to “get a better education,” “fuck off” and “shut the fuck up.”

But taxi drivers are heavily unionised — and transport union RMT has called for a “formal boycott” of Mr Mellor.

RMT general secretary Mick Cash said Mr Mellor’s behaviour was “outrageous, pompous and disgraceful.”

“To subject a taxi driver to a volley of aggressive abuse, and threatening to use his position to name the driver on his radio show, is frankly disgusting and intimidating,” he said.

“RMT is in consultation with our taxi members over the possibility of a boycott of this obnoxious and abusive character.”

A transcript of the conversation reveals that the driver repeatedly apologised.

And Ms Cobham, who had just received a glitzy gong from Prince Charles, reportedly blamed her foul-mouthed beau rather than his target.

“She’s telling me I’ve ruined her day. You’ve fucking ruined her day,” Mr Mellor spat.

“You’re going to go down in history as having turned London’s biggest black cab supporter into an Uber supporter,” he screeched, referring to the controversial causualised taxi app.

GMB professional drivers’ branch president Simon Rush called for a “public apology” from Mr Mellor.

“People are often using their mobiles to tell you which route to follow and sadly this often leads to abuse of the driver,” he said.

Black cab driver and Unite rep Mike Hedges told the Star: “It’s outrageous behaviour that completely sums up the Tory attitude.

“If I saw him I don’t think I’d pick him up.”
