First Great Western staff vote on strike action

Profiteer accused of devising 'draconian' punishments for staff

Two thousand rail workers at First Great Western have begun voting on strike action.

Transport union RMT has accused the profiteer of using “draconian procedures” to discipline and sack staff. Two workers were sacked recently.

RMT also said the firm is using more and more agency workers and is exploiting zero-hours contracts, where workers are called in when needed and sent home unpaid at management’s whim.

First Great Western operates services between London, south-west England, the West Midlands and Wales.

RMT staff include some drivers, all on-board staff and station workers such as ticket office staff.

Acting general secretary Mick Cash said: “A company that values its staff offers decent pay and conditions, and that is all our members are asking for.”

He called for the disciplinary and dismissal system to be changed and for two sacked RMT members to be reinstated.

The ballot closes on April 22.
