Michael Rosen
Just to clear something up,
we need mega rich people –
bankers and owners of giant corporations
otherwise there wouldn’t be any work for anyone.
People wouldn’t know how to do anything.
People would sit around all day, dying.
Luckily we have enormously rich people who,
out of the kindness of their hearts,
give us jobs to do.
That’s why we can eat.
It’s thanks to them.
Michael Rosen has written and edited over 140 books, and is one of our best-loved writers for children. Rosen was born in North London in 1946. Both of his parents were both teachers, and after university he worked for the BBC on Play School and Schools TV. He currently presents Radio Four’s long-running Word of Mouth. He is also Professor of Children’s Literature at Goldsmith’s, University of London. This poem is from Rosen’s new collection Don’t Mention the Children (Smokestack).
