‘Hypocrite’ PM stays silent as Tory Lupton joins Lords

DAVID CAMERON apparently dropped his objections to the Lords yesterday as Tory co-treasurer James Lupton took a seat, writes Luke James.

The Prime Minister criticised “unelected peers” on Wednesday for blocking the Tories’ cuts to tax credits in Parliament.

But he had nothing to say as Mr Lupton, a multimillionaire Tory donor, took his place in the Lords along with Tory council leader Liz Redfern.

The pair were among 45 peers appointed by Mr Cameron in August amid claims of cronyism and at the cost of £1.2 million to the taxpayer.

Electoral Reform Society deputy chief executive Darren Hughes accused the PM of “startling hypocrisy.”

He said: “The Prime Minister says he regrets not reforming the chamber in the last parliament.

“So instead of more partisan packing of the Lords, now is the time to do the right thing and get on with the vital work of ensuring we have a democratic upper house.”
