Manchester: Protest backs homeless camp facing eviction by council

PROTESTERS gathered at a camp set up by homeless people in Manchester on Saturday after the city council won an injunction to remove it.

The camp, involving about 30 homeless people, was established on April 15 as a permanent reminder to Manchester City Council of the city’s homelessness problem.

The council responsed with legal action to remove them.

The original camp moved to a new location on Anne’s Square, but now the council has won an injunction to remove the campers from the city centre completely.

Supporters staged an overnight protest on Saturday.

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett, who visited the camp last month, said: “I am very disappointed by this ruling, which demonstrates that Manchester City Council is simply trying to move the problem of homelessness out of sight, rather than dealing with appropriate accommodation and support services.”
