A SUTTON Trust survey claiming that teachers support performance-related pay does not indicate enthusiasm for Education Secretary Michael Gove’s reforms, National Union of Teachers general secretary Christine Blower warned yesterday.
The poll asked over 1,100 state school teachers how they felt their pay should be decided, with 60 per cent agreeing assessments by senior staff should be taken into account, 53 per cent citing pupils’ progress and 47 per cent length of service.
This “shows a positive response by a majority of teachers to performance-related pay,” Sutton Trust chairman Sir Peter Lampl claimed.
But Ms Blower noted that these factors are already taken into account — and that teachers’ response showed no enthusiasm for Mr Gove’s plan to let “25,000 schools decide their own pay structures.
“Teaching is a collaborative profession where outcomes are based on teamwork and the contribution of a number of teachers,” she said.
“Linking pay to exam results does not reflect the entire work of schools or teachers, a fact Sutton Trust acknowledges.”
