Be prepared for the final day at Ascot

Our tipster casts his expert eye over the pick of the weekend’s meets

IT IS the final day of the Royal Ascot Festival with one of the biggest betting races of the week, the Wokingham Handicap (5.00), headlining alongside the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes, both over six furlongs.

The former looks as open as ever but the filly Divine is well worth an each-way wager at around the 25/1 marker.

With just the seven runs on turf under her belt, this daughter of Dark Angel is still a work in progress so how much of a good thing was she when she won on her seasonal debut off a mark of 90 before running well in Listed company behind Tropics on her return to Windsor at the beginning of the month?

She should still be competitive here off 100 if ridden with a bit more restraint and is one of three entries I shall be having an each-way wager on.

The other two are Green Door and Gamesome. The former has also been plying his trade in better-class races than this and although he has yet to win over six furlongs, he has always looked as though a cover-up ride over this trip would suit.

Like Green Door, all ground seems to come alike to Gamesome and he was arguably the biggest eye-catcher in the field at Newmarket last time out when not getting the clearest of runs when a closing fifth of 22 behind Eastern Impact.

He too is pretty lightly raced and I am surprised, despite the competitive nature of the race, that he is still at betting odds as big as 14/1.

The Diamond Jubilee (4.20) should be at the mercy of the Aussie raider Brazen Beau, an impressive winner at Flemington Park last time out and with gears that should blow an ordinary home defence away headed by Music Master.

The latter can be forgiven for his poor run last time out as the ground was simply too slow and, along with last year’s third, Due Diligence looks the biggest player against Chris Waller’s charge.

Niceofyoutotellme looks too big a price at 12/1 for the Wolferton Handicap especially if he gets the pillar-to-post fast pace that is essential for him on the fast ground he adores.

I also think that Mahsoob is worth a saver as well, such was the dominance of his performance last time out at York, although I am worried that the short straight will play against him.

There is plenty of good racing elsewhere and the best wager outside Ascot comes in the form of Iffranesia in the Listed Land O’Burns Stakes, the 4.10 at Ayr.

It may also pay to have a second look at Stardrifter in the Haydock 7.45, Son of Africa (Newmarket 4.40) and the double-seeking Jebediah Shine (Redcar 5.45).
