English call for greater devolution

Devolution activists stepped up their campaign for greater regional powers across England yesterday as Scotland’s independence vote draws closer.

Hannah Mitchell Foundation general secretary Professor Paul Salveson laid out the “building blocks of a new, democratic English politics” in a report exploring the nation’s radical traditions.

The professor “calls for a genuine devolution of power to England’s regions in line with the changes taking place in both Scotland and Wales,” said foundation chairman Barry Winter.

“His argument could not be more relevant in these fluid times,” added Mr Winter.
