Public backs health workers’ pay struggle, research shows

Health workers fighting a Tory pay freeze received a boost yesterday when it was shown that the public overwhelmingly backed their aims.

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) reported research showing that 80 per cent of the public supports their case.

RCM chief executive Cathy Warwick said: “The public are backing this and a large majority of MPs across all parties are backing this.

“More industrial action is planned but it can be avoided.

“I repeat my appeal to the government to come back to the negotiating table to discuss this with us.”

Ministers’ decision to reject the NHS England pay review board’s recommended 1 per cent rise has already sparked major strike action among angry health workers.

The current imposed deal sees all NHS staff handed a freeze to basic pay, apart from those at the top of their pay scale who have been offered a one-off 1 per cent payout over 12 months.
