Jarrow walk-in closure inspires march and rally

PROTESTERS will be on the streets of Jarrow today demonstrating against the planned closure of a walk-in health centre.

South Tyneside Public Services Alliance says the closure of Jarrow Walk-in Centre will affect 27,000 people who use it each year.

Ruth Berkley of public service union Unison, which is supporting the protest, said: “There is no other walk-in centre in South Tyneside apart from the hospital accident and emergency unit (A&E). This will also affect the whole of South Tyneside including waiting times.”

A submission was also made to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt calling for a full review of the closure decision.

Instead of a review, officials are drawing up an “action plan” to examine how users of the centre could be accommodated — but the public will not be consulted.

Protesters will meet in Jarrow Town Hall car park at 11am today.
