Iraqi Kurds head to Turkey in fight against Isis

DOZENS of Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga fighters flew to Turkey yesterday prior to crossing into the Syrian border town of Kobane to help fellow Kurds defend it against Islamic State (Isis) forces.

Iraq’s Kurdish regional government gave the go-ahead last week to 150 peshmerga forces to go to Syria via Turkey.

Ankara, which has angered Kurds by its refusal to allow fighters or weapons into Kobane, compromised last week, saying that it would help Iraqi Kurdish fighters cross into Syria, but it has remained intransigent over the question of Turkey’s own Kurds helping out.

The large Iraqi peshmerga convoy is equipped with heavy weapons that have been lacking in Kobane.

US warplanes launched three air strikes on Isis targets in Kobane yesterday, where fighting was sporadic.

Isis sought a propaganda coup yesterday by releasing a video purporting to show British hostage John Cantlie broadcasting from Kobane where he said Isis forces were mopping up pockets of resistance.
