- Blairite bleating about being branded “red Tories” by cyber-bullies has been a feature of conference.
John McTernan, a one-time operations chief for Blair, launched into a passionate defence of his former boss at Tuesday’s Fabian fringe meeting.
But in the mother of all Freudian slips he said Labour should be proud of “Tories’ … er … Tony’s achievements.”
- Cruise-loving Labour executive member Ann Black made no bones of singling out Simon Danczuk and John Mann for their “way out of line” attacks on Jeremy Corbyn.
But the left should be wary of dumping all centrist MPs in the same boat, she warned Tuesday night’s Campaign for Labour Party Democracy round-up fringe.
And Norwich MP Clive Lewis was on hand to demonstrate why. “I had a high-ranking member of Progress — an MP — come up to me and say: ‘Clive, we need to find an exit strategy from neoliberalism’,” he recalled. Alas, the former BBC reporter and NUJ activist is unlikely to reveal his source.
- MPs warmed up for a rousing rendition of The Red Flag to close conference with “rockaoke” at the Mirror party on Tuesday night.
Labour’s Liverpool lad Andy Burnham naturally picked the Beatles, shadow culture secretary Michael Dugher did his bit for the music industry, singing Teenage Kicks by the Undertones, while Catherine West and Sadiq Khan combined for a duet of Bob Marley’s Every Little Thing.
And Sunderland MP Sharon Hodgson sent one to the new leader, belting out I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor.
We would also like to see a Ucatt rendition of Rihanna’s Umbrella Company, Eric Joyce having a crack at I Fought the Law
and George Galloway bellowing out Aretha Franklin’s Respect.
